Monaco 1886A 100 francs rev JElsen 103-1516.jpg

This specimen is lot 1516 in Jean Elsen sale 103 (Brussels, December 2009), where it sold for 680 euro. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, MONACO, Charles III (1856-1889), AV 100 francs, 1886 A, Paris. Petit coup sur la tranche. Superbe" (Monaco, Charles III (1856-89), gold 100 francs, 1886-A, Paris mint. Small nick on the edge, Extremely Fine).

This date is the scarcest of a type struck in Paris 1882-86, allegedly for use in the prince's newly opened casino in Monte Carlo. The denomination was continued 1891-1904 by his successor, Albert I. The coin matches the specification of the contemporary French 100 francs.

Recorded mintage: 15,000.

Specification: 32.25 g, 0.900 fine gold, .933 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Gadoury 122; Fr-11, KM 99.
