Monaco 1654 ecu Dav-4307
This specimen was lot 99135 in Heritage sale 61253 (Dallas, January 2022), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "Monaco: Honore II Scudo (Ecu or 60 Sols) 1654-(lr) AU Details (Cleaned) NGC. Lion, rampant mm. Significantly better preserved than the typical example of this scarce type, which averages perhaps only VF-XF. Displaying a hint of peripheral golden tone against otherwise pure argent color, alongside traces of the undertype, most clearly discernible in the legends. Mislabeled as Dav-4306 (earlier date, rose mm) on the holder insert." The prince of Monaco issued an extensive series of coinage, from copper double tournois to one écu, mostly imitation of the neighboring French coinage. Today, it is all scarce to rare altho, as always, the crowns obtain the highest prices. This type was struck 1654-62.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27 g, 0.917 fine silver.
