This specimen was lot 4274 in Goldberg sale 70 (Los Angeles, September 2012), where it sold for $1437.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States - Modena. 10 Soldi, ND. Ercole II D'Este Duca IV, 1534-1559. Bust right. Reverse: City shield. Toned. NGC graded Extremely Fine, Details (Scratches)." The Este family managed to remain Dukes of Modena from the sixteenth century until the coming of Napoleon in 1796. At the time, 6 denari = 1 sesino, 2 sesini = 1 soldo, 20 soldi = 1 lira, 12 lire = 1 tallero or scudo. Assuming this system obtained in the sixteenth century, ten soldi = 1/24 of a scudo.
