This specimen was lot 39012 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Modena. Grosso, ND (1226-93). Frederik ll. VERY FINE." This grosso was struck in the name of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II (r. 1220-50), to advertise the city's adherence to him during the Guelph-Ghibelline conflict. The Este family became lords of the town after 1288 and were elevated to dukes in 1450.
