Stack's Bowers 2026 ANA sale, lot 44651
SB826-44651r.jpg

This specimen was lot 44651 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $149. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Trade Tokens. Middlesex. Ibberson's Copper 1/2 Penny Token, ND (ca. 1790). PCGS MS-63 Brown. Obverse: St. George killing the dragon, boar at top; Reverse: Four lines of text within a wreath." Christopher Ibberson was the proprietor of this famous old hostelry in High Holborn in the West End of London. It was originally just called the "Blue Boar" and was a starting point for coaches heading North, and the tokens themselves advertise “Mail and Post Coaches to all parts of England”. Ibberson himself must have been a considerable businessman, as the records of the Old Bailey show him twice sitting on the Middlesex Grand Jury: in 1790, and again in 1792.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, 28 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: D&H-342.
