Mexico 2025 onza
This specimen was lot 74664 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $19,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Onza, 2025-Mo. Mexican (San Luis Potosi) Mint. NGC MS-69. Mintage: 300. "First Day of Issue". The undisputed KEY of the Libertad series, despite its recent production, no other date in the One Ounce Business strike Libertad series comes close in terms of sheer elusivity. The previous key in the series, the 1998 issue with a mintage of 67,000 dwarfs this issue. A unique conflagration of factors generated this minuscule mintage, as the 2023 and 2024 production runs produced a market glut by which dealers were still well stocked years after issue. Falling dealer demand as a result of the backlog generated this modern RARITY of the highest order." In 1949 the Mexico City mint issued the world's first onza to modest success. It tried again in 1980 with a resurrection of the 1949 design. In 1982 the medallion (technically, Libertads are not coins) was redesigned to use the obverse from the 1921 two pesos. The weight was reduced and the fineness increased from .925 to .999 silver. The medallion was an immediate hit. It was the only silver bullion coin on the market for several years and, backed by the Mexican government, outcompeted private mint issues. It inspired imitations such as the U. S. silver eagle (from 1986) and the Canadian Maple Leaf (from 1988) which have cut into its market share to the point where several of the later dates are downright rare. The type is recorded for 1996-2017 but is still in production.
Recorded mintage: unknown but few. We don't know if the 300 pieces quoted by the auctioneers include all formats or just the uncirculated strikes. Numista states 1,900 reverse proofs were made.
