This type was struck in Mexico 1974-85 but the 1983 is a proof only date. The portrait is of Miguel Hidalgo, hero of the War of Independence. These were struck on thin flans 1974-77 and thick flans 1978-85. Only the proofs are rare.

Recorded mintage: 74,500,000.

Specification: copper-nickel, 30.5 mm diameter.
