Metz 1590 3 deniers
This specimen was lot 782 in Jean Elsen sale 135 (Brussels, December 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, METZ, Ville, Billon 3 deniers, 1590. D/ + TRES DENARI Croix pattée, cantonnée de la date. R/ + MONETA METENSIS Ecu de la ville dans un cartouche orné. Très rare. Très Beau. (France, city of Metz, billon three deniers of 1590. Obverse: cross patté, date in field; reverse: ornate arms of the city date divides the value. Very Fine.)"
The bishop and city of Metz both issued coins but the town was under French occupation from the mid-1500's, which occupation was formally recognized by the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648.
