Mecklenburg-Schwerin 1647 thaler Dav-7033
This specimen was lot 172 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,854 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN, HERZOGTUM, Adolf Friedrich, 1610-1658. Reichstaler 1647, Wismar. RR Feine Patina, sehr schön. Kl. Bearbeitungsstelle am Rand, Felder altgeglättet. (Germany, duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Adolf Frederick, 1610-58, thaler of 1647, Wismar mint. Very rre, fine patina, very fine. slightl tooling on the edge and fields.)"
Adolph Frederick partitioned Mecklenburg into Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Gustrow in 1621, granting Gustrow to his brother John Albert II. He tried to remain neutral during the Thirty Years War but he and his brother were exiled by Wallenstein in 1627, returning in 1631 with Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. The last of his 19 children survived until 1708 as Adolf FriedrichII, duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. This type was struck 1637, 1639, 1642 and 1647 but all dates are rare.
