This specimen was lot 18115 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $10,925. The catalog description[1] noted, "Unique for the Bank. San Diego, CA - $10 1902 Date Back Fr-618 The Marine NB Ch. # (P)9483. Lowell paid considerably in excess of then-current price levels when he stepped up to buy this unique San Diego example many years ago, but his judgement has certainly been vindicated, as this note has remained unique and is likely to retain that status forever. This bank issued Date Backs only for less than seven years, and no less a collector than Harlan White, based in San Diego for a generation, was never able to acquire even one example from here. Lowell has been approached many times over the years by collectors wishing to obtain this note, but tonight all will have an equal chance to obtain this great item. Fine."
