Maratha AH 1168/2 rupee KM-229
This specimen was lot 2517 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "MARATHA CONFEDERACY: Jhansi, AR rupee, Balwantnagar, year 2, , in the name of Alamgir II (1754-1759), lovely strike, XF." The Marathas were an alliance of Hindu princely families formed to resist the encroachment of the Mughal Empire in the seventeenth century. Major names included the Peshwas, the Gaekwars, the Bhonslas, the Holkars and the Sindhias, all of whom formed independent states when the confederacy broke up at the end of the eighteenth century. This type is listed for years 1, 2, 4, 5 (shown here) and 6. It is common. The Marathas operated over thirty mints at this time. Other products of this mint include KM 269 (formerly KM 139) struck AH 1168/2 thru 1185/14, and KM 270 (formerly KM 140) struck AH 1187/15 thru AH 1209/29.
