Mansfeld-Artern 1616-AK thaler Dav-6951
This specimen was lot 1381 in Goldberg Sale 146 (Los Angeles, July 2025), where it sold for $276. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Mansfeld-Artern. Taler, 1616-AK. Eiseben. Volrat VI, Jobst II and Wolfgang III. Pop 1; The only one graded at PCGS. Nice even toning. PCGS graded VF-25. The Augustana Collection." It seems the various branches of the Mansfeld line all lived in Schloss Mansfeld but occupied different parts: Vorderort (outer castle), Mittelort (middle castle) and Hinterort (inner castle). The properties were shuffled among the various lines as various counts failed to produce heirs. In 1580, the elector of Saxony seized most of the property for debt. In 1616, we note the following thalers: KM 13/Dav-6950, KM 14/Dav-6951 (struck 1616-17, obverse title "VOLRT·IOBST·E·WOLFGA·PATR·", shown here), KM 15/Dav-6951A, KM 16/Dav-6952 and KM 17/Dav-6953. The last line died out in 1780 and the elector annexed what remained of the domain.
