Malwa AH 888 tanka Fr-645
This specimen was lot 6539 in CNG Triton XXIX (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $1,715. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA, Islamic Sultanates. Malwa. Ghiyath Shah. AH 873-906/AD 1469-1500. AV Tanka. Square module. Dated AH 888 (AD 1483/4). Titles of Ghiyath Shah / Continuation of titles and name of Ghiyath Shah. Toned, deposits in devices, shroff mark on obverse. VF. Ex Album 49 (13 June 2024), lot 706; Classical Numismatic Group Islamic 4 (19 October 2023), lot 226." The Sultans of Malwa ruled their state in central India from 1392 to 1562 and issued a number of gold coins based on the tanka. Some of them are actually not rare. This ruler issued a double tanka, tanka and half tanka, all square. The state was conquered by Akbar and was made part of the Mughal Empire.
