Malta 1637 grano
This specimen was lot 2100 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €85 (about US$98 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MALTE, Ordre de Saint-Jean, Jean-Paul Lascaris-Castellar (1636-1657), Cu 1 grano, 1637. D/ Armes du grand maître en plein champ. R/ Croix de l'Ordre cantonnée de la date. Rare. (Order of Malta, Jean-Paul Lascaris-Castellar, 1636-57, copper grano of 1637. Obverse: arms of the grandmaster in a plain field; reverse: Maltese cross cantonned with the date. Rare, Very Fine.)"
This scarce type was struck 1637-38. The reverse legend, "☩ SVB HOC SIGNO MILITAMVS", translates as, "Under this sign we fight."
