Künker Auction 439, lot 2132

This specimen was lot 2132 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$4,677 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MALTA, JOHANNITERORDEN Juan de Omedes, 1536-1553. Tari o. J., Valletta. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 319, Osnabrück 2019, Nr. 2676. (Order of Malta, Juan de Homedes, 1536-53, undated tari, Valletta mint. Very scarce in this quality, about extremely fine.)"

We don't think this coin was minted in Valletta as that town was constructed by order of grandmaster Jean de Valette in 1566. In Juan de Homedes' day, minting was conducted at Fort St. Angelo (Birgu). Twelve tari made a scudo. Tari are also known dated 1538-43 and bear the reverse legend "✦ ECCE ✦ AGNVS ✦ D ✦ QVI ✦ TOLLIT ✦", taken from John 1:29: "Altera die vidit Joannes Jesum venientem ad se, et ait: Ecce agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccatum mundi/The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, 'Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.'"

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.82 g, silver, 22 mm diameter, this specimen 2,76 g.
