Künker sale 386, lot 4812

This specimen was lot 4812 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €360 (about US$465 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Emerich Joseph von Breitbach-Bürresheim, 1763-1774. Konv.-Taler 1770, DF, Mainz. Sehr seltener Jahrgang. Sehr schön. Erworben 1953 von der Münzenhandlung Richard Götze (RIGÖ), Berlin. (archbishopric of Mainz, Emerich Joseph von Breitbach-Bürresheim, 1763-74, convention thaler of 1770, Mainz mint. Very rare date, very fine.)"

The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This thaler of 1770-71 is scarce but not rare. A pfennig was the only other coin struck in Mainz in 1770.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 27.85 g.
