Künker sale 386, lot 4809

This specimen was lot 4809 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €180 (about US$233 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Emerich Joseph von Breitbach-Bürresheim, 1763-1774. Konv.-Taler 1767, FB, Mainz. Seltener Jahrgang. Leicht justiert, sehr schön. (archbishopric of Mainz, Emerich Joseph von Breitbach-Bürresheim, 1763-74, convention thaler of 1767, Mainz mint. Rare date, lightly adjusted, very fine.)"

The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This thaler of 1767-68 is scarce but not rare. A five kreuzer was the only other coin struck in Mainz in 1767.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 27.95 g.

Catalog reference: KM 363, Slg. Walther 606; Dav-2426; Slg. Pick 730.
