Künker sale 406, lot 4298

This specimen was lot 4298 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,837 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAGDEBURG, ERZBISTUM, Christian Wilhelm von Brandenburg, 1598-1608-1631. Reichstaler 1610, Halle. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön +. (Germany, archbishopric of Magdeburg, Christian William of Brandenburg, 1598-1608-1631, thaler of 1610, Halle mint. Handsome patina, very fine or better.)"

By the second half of the sixteenth century, the archbishopric of Magdeburg was completely converted to Lutheranism yet the ecclesiastical state was not abolished. Instead, it became a puppet state of the elector of Brandenburg, who either appointed himself or one of his close relatives archbishop. Brandenburg annexed it outright in 1680. Five dates are known for 1608-12 but the type remains rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29.17 g.

Catalog reference: KM 9, Dav-5474; v. Schr. 413.
