Luxembourg survived Nazi occupation during World War Two and joined the European Coal and Steel Community in the fifties, the predecessor to the European Union. Grand duke Jean (1921-2019), veteran of the Normandy landings, ruled 1964-2000. Luxembourg is not a regular issuer of coins and this type was struck 1980-83. The denomination was last struck for circulation in 1990. In 1982, US$1 = 45.6 francs.
