CNG Lissner sale, lot 523

This specimen was lot 522 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,210. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY, Lucca (Ducato). Carlo Lodovico di Borbone. 1824-1847. AR Lira. Dated 1838. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64. Superb gem coin with faint iridescence in many hues. Fantastic coin with claims to a higher grade. Very rarely offered in this condition. Only one graded higher. Purchased from Robert Westfall, April 1978." This type is listed for 1834-38. These obscure little Italian states coins don't catalog for much but are very difficult to find. This specimen brought triple the catalog value. Charles Louis, king of Etruria as a child, ruled this tiny state as an adult.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.72 g, 0.667 fine silver, this specimen Ø23 mm, 4.88 g, 6h axis.
