The first specimen was lot 1138 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 14,000 CHF (about US$16,993 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE | Lothringen, Herzogtum. Franz III. Stephan, 1729-1736. Dukat (1/2 François d'or) 1736, Nancy. Von grösster Seltenheit. Gutes vorzüglich. NGC AU58. (France, duchy of Lorraine, Francis III, 1729-36, ducat or half francois d'or of 1736, Nancy mint. Of the highest rarity, Good extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 1219 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,

"Franz III. Stephan, 1729-1736. Dukat (1/2 Francois d'or) 1736, Vienne oder Nancy. Äusserst selten. Attraktives sehr schönes Exemplar. Kleine Randfehler. (duchy of Lorraine, Francis III Stephen, 1729-36, ducat or half francis d'or of 1736 Vienna or Nancy mints. Extremely rare, Attractive very fine specimen, Minor edge flaws.)"

A double ducat (KM 134) also exists and the two represent the last coinage from this state. The duke also issued gold coins called leopolds d'or which matched the double ducat. These are also rare. Francis III later married Maria Theresia of Austria and traded his duchy for Tuscany. In 1766, Lorraine passed to France, which had coveted it since the reign of Louis XIII.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, the first specimen 3.48 g, the second specimen 3.44 g.
