This specimen was lot 40495 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $7,638. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Lorraine. Ecu, 1603. Nancy Mint. NGC AU-53. Artistic Portrait Ecu of Charles III (1545-1608). RARE. Darkly toned. From the Demarete Collection." Of the three types of écus the SCWC lists for Lorraine for 1603 (Dav-6901, -6902, -6903), this is the only one with a price. In 1603, duke Karl considered himself a subject of the German emperor; only in Louis XIV's time did Lorraine fall into the French sphere of influence and it wasn't annexed to France until 1766.
