Künker sale 400, lot 484

This specimen was lot 484 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €36,000 (about US$46,703 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH/LOTHRINGEN, HERZOGTUM, Karl III. 1545-1608. Florin d'or 1588, Nancy. + CAROLVS · DEI · GRATIA Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel//Wappen von Lothringen, umher sieben kleinere, gekrönte Wappen der Bezirke, oben die geteilte Jahreszahl 15 - 88. Von allergrößter Seltenheit, wohl Unikum. Prachtexemplar. Feine Goldpatina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. (France, duchy of Lorraine, Charles III, 1545-1608, gold florin of 1588, Nancy mint. Obverse: armored and mantled bust right; reverse: arms of Lorraine, seven small shields around, divided date at top. Supremely rare, perhaps unique, choice example, fine gold patina, minor planchet defects, extremely fine.)"

Charles III issued a number of gold coins during his long rule (Fr-143 thru -151), all scarce. This one is listed in Friedberg only as "very rare"). It is noted therein as a ducat, but we side with the auctioneers in calling it the slightly lighter "florin".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.25 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3,18 g.

Catalog reference: Flon -; Fr-151.
