Sincona sale 47, lot 1726
Lorraine in 1547, from Putzger's atlas

This specimen was lot 1726 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 225 CHF (about US$270 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Lothringen, Herzogtum, Karl III. 1545-1608. Sol 1581, Nancy. Münzmeisterzeichen F (Jean Ferry). Selten. Sehr schön. (duchy of Lorraine, Charles III, 1545-1608, sou of 1581, Nancy mint, mintmaster F. Rare, Very fine.)"

Altho the duke doubtless spoke French, he did not consider himself a subject of the king of France but rather of the emperor. The province would not fall under French domination until after the Thirty Years War and was not annexed until the death of the last duke in 1766.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver or billon; this specimen 1.12 g.

Catalog reference: Flon 648,103.
