Lorraine 1522 1/4 teston
This specimen was lot 900 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "LORRAINE: Anthony, 1508-1544, AR quart de teston, 1522, Nancy Mint, + AnThOn* LothOR* ET* BAR* DVX*, VF, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection." Altho the duke doubtless spoke French, he did not consider himself a subject of the king of France but rather of the emperor. The province would not fall under French domination until after the Thirty Years War and was not annexed until the death of the last duke in 1766. This type was struck 1512-1515, 1522-29, 1532-38, 1544.
