JE164-1964r.jpg
Livorno in the seventeenth century, on the coast of Tuscany

This specimen was lot 1964 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €110 (about US$153 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, LIVOURNE, Ferdinand II de Médicis (1621-1670), AR luigino, 1661 V. D/ T. radiée à d. R/ Écu couronné. Très Beau. (Italy, Livorno, Ferdinand II de Medici, 1621-70, silver luigino of 1661. Obverse: crowned head right; reverse: crowned arms. Very Fine.)"

Several Italian states struck this denomination, roughly equal to a French twelfth écu, during a brief fad for these coins in the Levant trade. Livorno issued this type for the grand duke of Tuscany 1657-65.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.22 g, silver, this specimen 2,16 g.

Catalog reference: KM 8, Cammarano 143.
