Steve Album sale 54, lot 920

This specimen was lot 920 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $540. The catalog description[1] noted, "LIVONIAN ORDER: Wilhelm von Fürstenberg, 1557-1559, AR 1/2 mark, Riga, [15]57, ruler with sword behind four-fold arms separating date, all within inner beaded circle with WILHELM. VORSTENBDG. M. LI around // great City arms within inner beaded circle with MONETA. NOVA. RIGENSIS around, light haymarking, a couple spots of residue/oxidation, a very rare issue, XF." This type was struck 1557-58 for Wilhelm von Furstenberg along with a half mark (KM MB47) for Heinrich von Galen. Like the Teutonic Knights, the Livonian Knights conquered extensive territories in the Baltic States in the Middle Ages and spent the ensuing centuries defending them from Swedes, Poles, Russians and Danes. The last commander converted to Lutheranism in 1561 and seized the remaining lands as a duchy for himself and his heirs. The region is now part of Latvia.
