Lippe-Detmold 1672-IH 2 thaler
This specimen was lot 162 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €22,000 (about US$28,541 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"LIPPE, GRAFSCHAFT, Simon Heinrich, 1666-1697. Doppelter Reichstaler 1672 (geprägt 1674-1677 oder 1680), Detmold. Abschlag von den Stempeln des Reichstalers. SIMON · HENRICH . C . & · NOB : DOM : IN LIPP :· Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit Halstuch und umgelegtem Mantel//CLEMENTE DEO ET BONA CONSCIENTIA :· Behelmtes, vierfeldiges Wappen, zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl 16 - 72 und die geteilte Signatur · I · - · H · (Johann Hoffmann, Münzmeister in Detmold 1671-1695). Von großer Seltenheit. Feine Patina, sehr schön. (Germany, county of Lippe-Detmold, Simon Henry, 1666-97, double thaler of 1672, likely struck 1674-77 or 1680, Detmold mint, struck with thaler dies. Obverse: armored and mantled bust right with cravat; reverse: helmeted and quartered arms divide the date and initials "I - H". Extremely rare, fine patina, very fine.)"
Davenport and the SCWC list several single thalers for this state for 1672, including Dav-6895/KM 87, Dav-6895A/KM 88 and Dav-6896/KM 89, and even a pattern struck in gold (KM Pn2), but no double thalers.
