Liege 1763 escalin
This specimen was lot 5543 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €550 (about US$711 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BELGIEN, LÜTTICH, Sedisvakanz 1763. Escalin 1763. Hübsche Patina, leicht justiert, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Belgium, bishopric of Liège, Sede vacante, escalin of 1763. Handsome patina, lightly adjusted, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The bishopric of Liège was an ecclesiastical state in central Belgium and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. The surrounding territory was ruled by the Spanish Hapsburgs from about 1500 until 1699 and the Austrian Hapsburgs 1714-97. The type shown here was struck 1763 during the interval between the death of John Theodore and the elevation of Charles d'Outremont. The SCWC notes it as rare. An issue of 1792 ends the denomination.
