Liege 1724 2 patagons Dav-1582
This specimen was lot 1217 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €26,000 (about US$33,359 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"LIEGE, Principauté, Siège vacant (1723-1724), AR écu au saint Lambert (patagon), 1724, Liège. Piéfort de poids double. Tranche lisse. D/ B. mitré du saint à g. R/ Cartouche couronné aux armes de la principauté, sur un manteau d'hermine. De la plus haute rareté. Superbe. Provient de la collection Dr Sandront, 27 mai 2010 et de Schulman, Amsterdam, vente 245, 6-8 juin 1967, 1241. (principality of Liège, sede vacante, piedfort silver patagon of 1724, Liège mint, plain edge. Obverse: mitred bust of St. Lambert left; reverse: crowned and mantled arms. Of the highest rarity, Extremely Fine.)"
Three different patagons were made in 1724 during the episcopal vacancy: Dav-1583 (date divided by the cap), Dav-1584 (date on obverse) and Dav-1585 (date divided by the arms, shown here). All are rare. Altho piedfort ducatons, silver ducats and rijkdaalders were popular in the neighboring United Provinces, this is the only one we can find for Liège in the eighteenth century.
