(Liège) Maximilian Henry of Bavaria, 1650-1688. Crowned quartered shield within middle shield - beneath, crook and sword. Leg: M - AX. HEN. ELEC. COLEPS -LEO. BA - D. Reverse: Legend on decorated tablet. Leg: DVCATVS / NOWS DVC/ BVLLONI/ ENSIS, date below square. Rare. NGC graded MS-61. Liege was a powerful bishopric in the 17th century, with far greater holdings than the present city in Belgium. In fact, Liege controlled much of western Belgium and parts of France. The silver coins of the bishopric of Maximilian Henry are quite common, but the gold coins are almost never offered. The legend on the reverse tablet found on the reverse indicates the Dutch influence." The second specimen was lot 2641 in Goldberg sale 59 (Beverly Hills, May 2010), where it did not sell.
