Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 1213

This specimen was lot 1213 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €360 (about US$470 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LIEGE, Principauté, Ferdinand de Bavière (1612-1650), AR demi-daler Ferdinand de 15 sols, 1615, Visé. Au titre de duc de Bouillon. Sans indication de valeur au revers. D/ B. à g. R/ Cartouche aux armes de Bouillon, sous une couronne, entre F-B. En dessous, XV- 1615. Rare. Très Beau. (prince-bishopric of Liège, Ferdinand of Bavaria, 1612-50, silver half daalder Ferdinand of 15 sols of 1615, Visé mint. In the name of the duke of Bouillon, without value on reverse. Obverse: bust left; reverse: cartouches with the arms of Bouillon under a crown, dividing "F-B". Below: XV and the date. Rare, Very Fine.)"

This denomination, which was struck intermittently by the prince-bishop 1615-45, has a confusing variety of names. It is variously labeled a teston, a demi-daalder, a half thaler, a 15 sols or a 15 patards. See also KM D53.1, B53, D53.3, 68 and 69.
