Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 1031

This specimen was lot 1031 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"LIEGE, Principauté, Jean d'Arckel (1364-1378), AR gros au saint Pierre, 1373-1376, Maastricht. D/ + MONETA SA-NCTI PETRI B. de saint Pierre de f. dans un polylobe, coiffé d'une tiare, ten. une clé et la Bible, au-dessus de l'écu d'Arckel coupant la légende. R/ + IOHANNES EP'S LEODIENSIS Croix feuillue et ornée. Très rare. Petit éclat du flan. Quelques taches. Très Beau. Provient de la collection A. Symkens, Liège, 25 novembre 1991. (prince-bishopric of Liège, John of Arkel, 1364-78, silver groat of St. Peter, circa 1373-76, Maastricht mint. Obverse: St. Peter facing in a polylobe, wearing a tiara, holding a key and a bible, the arms of Arkel below; reverse: ornate leafy cross. Minor edge crack, some stains, Very Fine.)

Ce gros diffère du type normal par l'ajout de la tiare pontificale sur la tête de saint Pierre. (This groat differs from the normal type by the addition of the pontifical tiara on the head of Saint Peter.)"

Jean d'Arckel (b. 1314) was previously bishop of Utrecht (1342-64) before being promoted to the throne of Liège by pope Urban V. He annexed the county of Loon in 1366.
