Lebanon 1940 piastre
The first specimen was lot 35103 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $106. The catalog description[1] noted, "LEBANON. Piastre, 1940(a). NGC MS-62." The second specimen was lot 71162 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[2] noted, "LEBANON. Piastre, 1940. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder. Well struck and attractive." This specimen was issued by Lebanon as a wartime issue in zinc. During the war, Germany, through Vichy France, used Lebanon to move military equipment east into Iraq. To thwart this, the Free French recognized Lebanese independence and moved British and French troops into the area.
