The Republic of Latvia was established in 1918 after the fall of czarist Russia. However, its independence was short lived, as it was occupied by Soviet troops in 1940 during World War II and the end of the war brought only incorporation into the Soviet Union. It regained its independence again in 1991.
Shown is a bronze santims struck for Latvia 1937-39. The obverse displays the Latvian coat of arms.
