SB821-41116r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41116 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $2,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "LATVIA. Santims, 1932. Le Locle (Huguenin) Mint. PCGS PROOF-65 Brown Gold Shield. VERY RARE as a proof (with reportedly just one other specimen known), this charming specimen does exhibit some mottled brown color, but nevertheless radiates with brilliance when cradled back and forth. Ex: South African Mint Collection." The Republic of Latvia was established in 1918 after the fall of czarist Russia. However, its independence was short lived, as it was occupied by Soviet troops in 1940 during World War II and the end of the war brought only forcible incorporation into the Soviet Union. It regained its independence in 1991. Shown is a bronze santims struck for Latvia in Switzerland 1922-35.

Recorded mintage: 5,000,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 1.65 g, bronze, 17 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-1.
