Kwangtung Province (now Guangdong) is on the south coast of China, and surrounds Hong Kong and Macau. The mint in the city of Guangzhou (Canton) opened in 1888 and issued a large number of coins until closure in 1931.

The specimen shown was lot 60427 in Ponterio sale 162 (Hong Kong, August 2011), where it sold for $7170. The catalog description[1] noted, “CHINA. Kwangtung. 3 Mace 6 1/2 Candareens (50 Cents/ 1/2 Dollar), ND (1889). Solder mark in central reverse, surfaces show evidence of use in jewelry. 端有熔焊情形,是當銀飾使用的痕跡。NGC VF Details--Repaired. Wa She Wong Collection.”
