Kwangsi 1949 (year 38) 20 cents Y-416
Kwangsi (Guangxi) Province is situated on the southern border, west of Hong Kong and bordering Vietnam. It constitutes the Guangxi Ahuang Autonomous Region, which holds special privledges for the indigenous Zhuang people. Mints operated at various times, with modern mints established in 1905 in two cities (Nanning and Kweilin). The specimen shown was lot 60413 in Ponterio sale 162 (Hong Kong, August 2011), where it sold for $5,378. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Kwangsi. 20 Cents, Year 38 (1949). 民國三十八年廣西省造貳毫銀幣。Elephant nose hill at Kweilin. 桂林象鼻山。NGC EF-40." We note that the date is in error in the description, should be 1949, the year of the Communist victory over the Nationalists.
