Kenya 1988 500 shillings KM-24
The East African region including present-day Kenya is home to many indigenous groups such as the Kikuyu and Masai. It became a part of the British empire as a colony (see British East Africa). After the bloody Mau-Mau rebellion in the early 1960's Kenya achieved independence (1964), but remained a member of the British Commonwealth.
Jomo Kenyatta, member of the Kikuyu tribe, was the first president of Kenya (1964-1978) and appears on all coins of that period. Daniel Arap Moi appears on coins starting in 1978. This specimen was lot 1281 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €120 (about US$166 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KENYA, République (1964-), AR 500 shillings, 1988. 10e anniversaire de Moi comme président. Flan poli. (republic of Kenya, silver 500 shillings of 1988, tenth anniversary of Daniel Moi as president. Proof.)"
Recorded mintage: unknown but all proofs.
