Keeling Cocos 1977 150 rupees
This specimen was lot 33475 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "KEELING COCOS ISLANDS. 150 Rupees, 1977. John Clunies Ross. NGC MS-68. A nearly-flawless example, delivering good details and charming details throughout." The SCWC comments, "The entire issue of X#10 was stolen with only 290 pieces being recovered." That may explain why this issue is consigned to the Unusual World Coins. John Clunies-Ross (1786-1854) established a coconut plantation there and his family ruled the islands as private property until the 1970's. The islands are now governed by Australia.
Recorded mintage: 2,000.
