Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74527

This specimen was lot 74527 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "SENEGAL. Upper Senegal & Niger. Kayes. Octagonal Aluminum 10 Centimes Token, 1920. Paris Mint. PCGS MS-65. Tied with just one other example for the top spot in the PCGS census, this colonial issue presents a light gray hue and flashy brilliance." This token is mentioned in the SCWC with no photo or details. The town of Kayes was then in French Sudan, now in Mali. We have filed it under French West Africa. The town is reputed to be the hottest city in Africa, with daytime temperatures in excess of 90°F the year round.
