Sedwick Treasure Auction 38, lot 1646
Sedwick 38-1646r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1646 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $390. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS (Holy Roman Empire), Campen, 6 stuivers (arendschelling), Ferdinand III (1637-57). Choice example of this Ferdinand III type (evidently the first coin from his reign recovered from this wreck that we've offered) with bold double-headed eagle and shield, significant legend text visible, very faintly corroded. Pedigreed to the Steve Valentine Collection, with original certificate from the salvor/conservator. Recovered from Merestein, sunk in 1702 off South Africa." A number of towns issued coins in the Netherlands besides the provinces and the Generality consistently found them below standard as to weight and purity. Decades of complaints finally resulted in the closure of all the municipal mints by the end of the seventeenth century. This undated type, struck in the name of emperor Ferdinand III, is rather scarce. The coin derives its name from the eagle on the reverse. In the eighteenth century, this denomination became the scheepjesschelling.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.95 g, 0.500 fine silver, 30 mm diameter, this specimen 3.86 grams.

Catalog reference: KM-45.
