from Steve Album sale 27, lot 2203

This specimen was lot 2203 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description^[1] noted, "KALAYAN: Muhammad Shah Khair al-Din, 1797-1812, AR rupee, ND. Kalima obverse, lion on reverse below mint name, Persian "H" to right, Fine to VF, R. Hyderabad Feudatory State." Kalayan was a vassal of the Hyderabad state, which is why we have listed its scanty coinage therein. The SCWC also mentions an eighth rupee or two annas. The town, now a suburb of Mumbai, is today spelled Kalyan.
