This specimen was struck for Japan by the Tokyo mint, which issued this type 1967-88. This fifty yen was introduced in 1955 as part of Macarthur's currency reform of 1948, which dropped all denominations under one yen. A hole was added in 1959 (KM Y76) and the coin shrunk to its current size in 1967. It is still being issued today under Akihito's name.
Recorded mintage: 91,300,000.
Specification: 5.5 g, nickel, 24 mm diameter, reeded edge.
