Jagerndorf 1590 2 thaler Dav-9326
This specimen was lot 1036 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it sold for €7,750 (about US$10,672 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SILÉSIE, JÄGERNDORF, Georg Friedrich de Brandebourg (1543-1603), AR double Taler, 1590. D/ B. cuirassé à d., ten. une masse d'armes à l'épaule et la garde de son épée. R/ Croix ornée, l'écusson de Brandebourg au centre, cantonnée de quatre écussons (Silésie, Zollern, Poméranie et Nuremberg). Extrêmement rare. Fines griffes dans le champ. Légères traces de monture. La tranche limée. Très Beau. (Germany, Silesia, duchy of Jägerndorf, George Frederick of Brandenburg, 1543-1603, silver double thaler of 1590. Obverse: armored bust right, holding a mace and the pommel of a sword reverse: ornate cross, shield of Brnadenburg at the center, cantonned with four escutcheons of Silesia, Zollern, Pomerania and Nuremburg. Extremely rare, light scratches in the field, traces of a mount mark, filed edge, Very Fine.)"
Silesia is considered a German State even tho the province was then under Austrian rule and is now in Poland. Jägerndorf, in upper Silesia, was part of Silesia that Austria retained after Frederick the Great conquered the major portion for Prussia in 1741-45. It is now part of the Czech Republic. For many generations it was held by the princes of Liechtenstein but before that, the duchy was ruled by the margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach 1523-1623. This rare issued was struck 1589-91 and is not priced in the SCWC. The modern, Czech, name for the town is Krnov.
