This specimen was part of lot 1491 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $7,050. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Lira to 10 Lire Denomination Set, 1947-R. 4 pieces in set. Each with a mintage of only 12,000 pieces with the exception of the 5 Lire which has a mintage of 17,000 pieces. All are NGC MS-64." The republic of Italy was organized out of the ruins of World War Two and the disaster of Mussolini's fascism. This type was issued 1946-1950 and the first two years are rare. Its replacement (KM 93) was only 1.6 g.
