Sincona sale 51, lot 3573

This specimen was lot 3573 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$362 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Italien, Königreich, Vittorio Emanuele III. 1900-1946. 2 Lire 1905 R, Roma. Fast FDC. Feine Patina. (kingdom of Italy, Victor Emanuel III. 1900-46, two lire of 1905, Rome mint. About uncirculated, Nice toning.)"

This type was struck for the kingdom of Italy 1901-07. All the dates are scarce to rare. The weight and fineness matches that of a French two francs. This denomination was struck to this standard until 1917, when the stress of wartime inflation forced the government to suspend production. When mintage of the lira resumed in 1923, it was a nickel coin. Vittorio Emanuele III succeeded his father Umberto upon the latter's assassination in 1900.

Recorded mintage: 1,643,000, a scarce date.

Specification: 10 g, 0.835 fine silver, .268 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM-33; Mont. 144. Pagani 729.
