Sincona sale 63, lot 1161

This specimen was lot 1161 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 4,000 CHF (about US$5,012 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Umberto I. 1878-1900. 50 Lire 1888 R, Roma. Selten. Nur 2'125 Exemplare geprägt. NGC AU58. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (kingdom of Italy, Umberto I, 1878-1900, fifty lire of 1888, Rome mint. Rare. Only 2,125 pieces struck, Extraordinary condition.)"

This rare type is listed for three dates: 1884, 1888 and 1891. It was struck to the standard of a French fifty francs d'or.
