This specimen was lot 3982 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $423. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALIAN SOMALILAND. 1/2 Rupia, 1919-R. NGC MS-62. Lovely light peripheral tone." This type, issued from the Rome mint for the Italian colony of Somaliland, is not rare in worn condition but the price ascends rapidly with grade. This type is listed for 1909-13 and 1921-24. It was struck to the standard of the Indian rupee rather than that of the Italian lira. Coinage for the area ceased in 1925.
Recorded mintage: 200,000.
Specification: 5.83 g, 0.917 fine silver.
