SB223-73840r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73840 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "ISRAEL. 5 Lirot, 1959. Berne Mint. NGC PROOF-66. A most impressive piece, this wholesome example delivers a somewhat matte nature, with full details and glittering appeal." Rapid inflation destroyed the value of the 1949 series and the coinage was reformed in 1960 to 100 agorot = one lira. This type did not circulate and was extensively saved.

Recorded mintage: 27,016 plus 4,712 proofs.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 34 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-23.
